Cancer Genomics 101, identifying what targeted therapy is and how to identify patients who would benefit, understanding the role of navigation in precision medicine “Dissecting cancer genomics like never before, Holli Dilks, PhD, will identify and explain cancer genomics and how precision medicine continues to evolve, where targeted therapy is going, and how the navigator can guide the patient through their complex journey.”
Speaker
Holli Dilks, PhD
Dr Holli Dilks is Senior Director and the Global Head of Field Medical for the Foundation Medicine Inc (FMI) Medical Affairs group. In 2019, she joined FMI to build alliances between scientific and medical communities and to blaze trails for educating physicians on the value of precision oncology.
She has more than 15 years of experience working on the front lines to build and lead dedicated teams of scientists and clinical researchers in the delivery of molecular education/consultation and large-scale research platforms for globally recognized nonprofit healthcare and biomedical research institutions. Prior to joining FMI, she served as Director of Personalized Medicine Operations for Nashville’s Sarah Cannon Research Institute from 2014 to 2019. Her leadership yielded novel discovery and application of molecular data analysis and genomics profiling technologies to better identify effective treatment options for patients suffering from cancer.

Operating at the top of one’s career scope means each navigator practices to the full extent of their education and training, rather than spending time doing tasks that could be performed by another member of the care team. During this discussion, we will hear from nurse navigator, patient navigator, and social work colleagues about their perspectives on working to the top of their career scopes.

Year 2021 highlighted the challenges and “needs to improve” of our current healthcare system that is leading into transformational system changes. Some ongoing developments involved payment models, standards to address oncology care, virtual access, and recent advancements in drug therapies to treat various types of cancer. The oncology ecosystem is positioned to face the challenges and accelerate further advancements. Where is navigation in all the developments?

In collaboration with Astellas Pharma, Inc, AONN+ has embarked on the development of an oncology navigation–specific acuity tool to help oncology navigators characterize the intensity of patient navigation workload, aid in the allocation of resources, and measure the effectiveness of navigation on patient outcomes.
The goal is for the tool to be utilized in multiple settings, by different types of navigators, across the continuum of the patient’s cancer journey.
Join us to hear updates on this exciting project and the importance of this work for the professions of oncology navigation.

Finding the balance as healthcare systems strive to meet national standards, face changes in healthcare reimbursement, as well as continue to work among the restraints from COVID-19 makes it challenging to deliver psychosocial support to every patient. Navigators may not formally assess psychosocial needs via a standard form, but they do assess patients at pivotal points as they interact with them. All types of navigators across the continuum fill vital roles in direct patient psychosocial care and in developing processes and procedures that improve delivery of personalized care.

While the navigator’s role and responsibilities vary per institution, patient navigation involves a variety of multidisciplinary team members, including dietitians for their specialized care. As per practice standards, coordination of care competency calls for the oncology nurse navigator to support a multidisciplinary approach to care for identification/intervention of clinical services to care, and the oncology patient navigator supports the knowledge of practice competency by demonstrating familiarity with and know- how to access and reference evidence-based information regarding cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. Many diagnoses require nutritional support for positive care outcomes, and a registered dietitian can be invaluable to patient care. It is a 2-way street as the registered dietitian would refer patients to navigators for disease education or financial support.
